<뜨거운 태양 아래서>라는 중편 소설과 짧은 여러 개의 소설 모음집.

표제작은 쿠웨이트로 밀입국하여 돈을 벌고자 하는 팔레스타인 인 세 사람이 물탱크에 갇혀서 질식해 죽는 이야기다. 밀입국을 약속한 물탱크 운전사는 왜 당신들은 탱크를 두드리지 않았냐며 운다. 왜, 왜 두드리지 않았느냐고.

두드리지 않은 이유는 국경의 군인들 때문이 아니다. 그동안 그렇게 두드렸으나 세상으로부터 외면당해왔다는 절망때문. 이라고. 생각함.

작가가 70년대에 죽었는데 지금 상황은 그 때랑 뭐가 얼마나 다른지.

장면전환이 멋있었다. 회상과 현재의 이미지 연결이 좋았다. 정치적 문제를 다루지 않은 작품들도 좋았다. 아무튼 누구나 한 번 읽어 봤으면 좋겠다.

ANTI-ZIONIST ORTHODOX JEWS PROTEST THE STATE OF ISRAEL

New York City, NY April 29, 2005.
2005년 4월 29일 뉴욕

If you happened to be passing by the Israeli Consulate yesterday afternoon you most surely would have been shocked by the unusual sight that greeted your eyes: a group of over 10,000 Orthodox Jews who were protesting against the actual existence of the state of Israel. Behind them hung large posters showing the beating of Orthodox Jews by Israeli police while they were protesting the desecration of antiquated Jewish cemeteries which are in the path of a planned highway expansion.

어제 오후 이스라엘 영사관 앞을 지나친 사람이라면 대부분 희귀한 장면에 충격을 받았을 것이다. 10,000명이 넘는 정통 유태인들이 이스라엘 국가의 현실 세계 존재에 항의하는 집회를 가진 것이다. 그들 뒤에는 고속도로의 팽창 정책으로 구(舊) 유대인 묘지를 없애려는 신성모독에 항의하는 정통 유대인들을 이스라엘 경찰이 구타하는 장면의 커다란 포스터가 걸려 있었다.

The shocking sight didn뭪 stop there. When you studied their signs and looked at the picture posters a shocking new world was revealed. Tens of thousands of religious Jews are protesting in the streets of Jerusalem against the state of Israel stating that the state of Israel, according to the Torah (that is the Jewish teachings) is illegitimate. They state that since the time that God sent the Jews into exile with the destruction of the temple two thousand years ago the Jews were forbidden to have their own state and that the whole concept of Zionism and the creation of the state of Israel was formed by irreligious Jews contrary to the Torah and the opinion of almost all of the Rabbinical leaders of Judaism worldwide.

충격적인 장면은 그것이 전부가 아니다. 그들의 의견을 알고 포스터들을 보면 충격은 새로운 국면을 드러낸다. 수만의 종교적 유대인들은 예루살렘 거리에서 이스라엘 국가는 토라Torah(유대교의 율법)에 대한 위반이라며 이스라엘 국가에 항의하였다. 그들은 하나님이 2000년 전 낙원의 파괴에 대한 책임으로 유대인을 추방한 그 이후로 유대인은 그들만의 국가를 설립하는 것을 금지당했다며 시오니즘과 이스라엘 국가 창설에 대한 모든 개념은 비종교적 유대인들이 토라와 전세계 랍비 지도자들 대부분의 의견에 반해 만든 것이라고 하였다.

The posters showed beaten and bloodied Rabbis sprawled on the ground cowering before Israeli police with stun guns and batons in their hands. Other posters showed old and young men alike being dragged on the ground and being piled into paddy wagons to be taken to Israeli prisons. Still other graphic pictures showed the excavated graves and bones spread over the ground; quite a shocking sight.

포스터는 구타당해 피를 흘리는 랍비들이 스턴 총(폭동 진압용의 작은 모래 주머니를 발사하는 총)과 바통을 손에 든 이스라엘 경찰 앞에 움츠린 채로 땅에 쓰러져 있는 것을 보여준다. 다른 포스터는 늙은 남자와 어린 남자들이 땅에 질질 끌려 범인 호송차에 강제로 실려 이스라엘 감옥으로 끌려가는 그림이다. 다른 그림들은 무덤이 파헤쳐져 뼈가 땅위에 나뒹구는 충격적인 장면을 보여준다.
