"The love of country that inspired the verdict of the Roman people was a desire to stop an ambitious citizen who wanted to corrupt the laws and impose his own power over the city, thereby threatening the common liberty. In Machiavelli's interpretation of Livy's report, 'country' (patria) stands again for laws and common liberty. The civic virtue of the Roman people was, then, a love of liberty that gave them the courage and the strength to stand against powerful men who attempted to impose tyranny over the republic."
